Artist Statement
My work is an awareness of art as a language that communicates the ineffable; a transmutation of ideas and states of being that are indefinable in their existence and yet unavoidable in their influence. The five formal elements of art in my work thus become part of an investigative alchemical process tinged with ritual and steeped in symbolism in hopes of achieving some brief ephemeral glimpse of transcendence and ego destruction. I am guided primarily by my interest in western and eastern mysticism, archetypes and the collective unconscious theorized by analytic psychologist Carl Gustav Jung, the power and presence of the non-rational and numinous explored by German theologian Rudolph Otto, and Korean painting from the Goryeo and Chosun Dynasty.
